Different Types Of Fishing Rods
To the unfamiliar, a fishing rod is just a stick made up of wood or metal that holds a string with bait in the end. Its structure is very basic because, from afar, you won’t see a lot of difference when compared to a regular pole. But to every angler, the right fishing rod is essential to a successful day in the water. They are intricately designed and manufacturers are often meticulous on every part of the fishing rod they release.
Every angler knows that choosing the right type of fishing rod is very important. Rods come in different types and each rod is built for a specific water condition and catch.
Fly Rods
Fly rods are used for artificial fly or fly lure. This type of rod is often lightweight and thin although there are heavier fly rods built for larger catches. This is a very popular type of rod because of its flexibility. It’s very sensitive to weight so any angler will immediately feel if there’s a bite. Fly rods often have limited area for handling (butt area) except for the double handed version called the spey rod.
Spinning Rods
Spinning rods are popular in sports fishing because of its advanced reel seat. The rod progressively gets smaller to the tip which maintains its sensitivity to bites with quicker reel action because of its reel seat’s location. This type of rod is popular because it allows the angler to pull the spool and easily retrieve the fish through reverse action. Double handed spinning rods also exist for larger catches and they are usually for saltwater.
Carp/Specialist Rods
Carp and specialist rods are specifically manufactured for a certain type of catch. The carp rod is particular popular because it comes in many forms: stalking, margin, distance casting and feeders are used for carp fishing. Its emphasis is on the tip and it should be lightweight so that anglers would be quick to react and sensitive to bites.
Coarse Rods
Coarse rods are developed for fresh water fishing, this type of rod is often medium in length for easier swing. It can be considered as a beginner’s rod because it’s very versatile in fresh water. It’s a little bit stiffer which means it’s less sensitive but requires little effort to pull out the catch.
Match/Float and Feeder rods
Match/float and feeder rods - This group of rods is very special since its end is used casting but not necessarily to catch fish at first contact. These rods leave fish food in a specific area so that fish would be attracted. These are usually long hard rods that allow longer casting.
Offshore Boat Rods
Developed for aggressive boat anglers, offshore boat rods place emphasis on strength as it is used for larger catches. The most popular type of offshore roads is the spinning type because of the easier reeling mechanism.
Surf/Beach and Lure Rods
Surf/beach and lure rods - One of the longest types of fishing rods, surf rods is no less than three meters in length. Aside from its length, it’s also known for its oversized handles and reel seats. Because it’s used for larger catches, it’s naturally built as two-handed rods.
Trolling Driver Rods
Trolling driver rods are a very specific type of rod and are developed for those who want to fish off the side of a moving boat. Although basic spinning rods could do a trolling rod’s work, they are often stiffer because they have to deal with constantly moving water.
Casting Rods
Casting rods - The name “casting” tells what it can do – a powerful rod ideal for casting. Because of recent technological advances casting rods are now lighter with the same power and capability of handling heavier catches and line.
Telescopic and Travel Rods
Telescopic and travel rods - These are practically rods for heavier catches built for anglers who have to travel for hours before they can reach their fishing area. These rods are made of up to seven pieces or more but they are still stable even with double handed casting. It has been a matter of discussion that a travel fishing rod is easy to carry, but its efficiency is low. The previous versions were not that effective, but the manufacturers of this rod have made a lot of changes that are meant to increase its usability.
Ice Fishing Rods
Ice fishing rods - These are basic-short fishing rods. They have a spinning-rod set-up only shorter. Because of its length, it has smaller number of guides. Its main difference is the special type of line that can handle extreme temperatures.
